FOR LOCALIZATION AGENCIES AND DTP TEAMS
Japanese typesetting repair for localized files
Japanese text placed by someone who does not read Japanese often looks fine to everyone except the Japanese reader.
The most common problem is Chinese characters mixed into the Japanese text. Your Japanese client notices at once; your team usually cannot.
We are a small typesetting studio in Chiba, Japan. The final check is always made by a native Japanese typesetter with 25 years of experience in Japanese DTP.
PROBLEMS
What we usually find
1. Simplified Chinese characters in Japanese text
Simplified Chinese forms of everyday words in manuals and catalogs. Japanese uses different characters, so a Japanese reader sees these as misprints. Some differ by a single stroke.
| Found in the file (Chinese) | Correct Japanese | Typical word |
|---|---|---|
| 步 | 歩 | 進歩 (progress — the Japanese form has one more dot) |
2. Chinese glyph forms caused by the wrong font
Many characters share the same Unicode code point in Chinese and Japanese, but are drawn differently. When a Chinese font is applied, or a Japanese font is replaced during file processing, the text looks wrong to a Japanese reader even though it checks out as correct text. A text-only QA cannot catch this.
| Code point | Chinese font | Japanese font | Typical word |
|---|---|---|---|
| U+4ECA | 今 | 今 | 今回 (this time) |
3. Other typesetting errors
- ・Line-breaking rule violations (kinsoku): a line starting with 。、」) or ending with 「(
- ・Wrong spacing around Japanese punctuation and brackets
- ・Missing or uneven spacing between Japanese and Latin text
- ・Full-width and half-width characters mixed inconsistently
- ・Broken vertical text, ruby (furigana) and tate-chu-yoko
- ・Fallback fonts and missing glyphs
